4 Myths About Metal Roofing For PA Residents

That is false. In fact, a metal roof is a better fit for solar installation than asphalt or cedar shingles due to its longevity and strength. Many solar installation companies prefer to install panels over metal rather than asphalt.

While that was true 20 years ago, today’s metal roofing is available in a vast assortment of colors. In fact, it is now available in custom colors if you prefer an exact color or need to match an existing structure. Custom colors are not an option with asphalt, cedar, or slate.

Metal roofing has advanced significantly since your grandpa’s barn roof. Rust is no longer a major issue. Agreed, a metal roof needs a fresh coat of paint after 35-40 years. However, that hardly qualifies as high maintenance. Scheduling a crew to refinish the roof after 40 years seem like a small price to pay for longevity, energy efficiency, and better return on investment from a metal roof.

Let us consider all the facts for a minute. An asphalt roof costs less than metal roofing but does that make it cheaper? While your initial investment is less, asphalt roofing in many cases costs you more.

Let us do some math.

  1. Your asphalt roof lasts 20-25 years which means you will pay for at least 2, possibly 3 asphalt roofs over the same amount of time your metal roof would have lasted.
  2. Now add in the disposal charge for dumping those old asphalt roofs in the landfill to the cost of your asphalt. Then subtract a % from the cost of your metal roof because when it is removed at the end of its life, you will be able to sell it for recycling.
  3. Don’t forget to factor in that a metal roof gives you up to a 25 percent savings on heating and a 40 percent savings on cooling for 50 plus years. The savings on energy alone makes metal roofing a far superior ROI to asphalt.

When you look beyond the initial cost to consider a metal roof as an investment with excellent ROI, you quickly see how homeowners justify its installation cost.
